Smith was previously a Columbus Express SC coach from 2009 to 2011.

Smith comes to Columbus Express SC from Kings Hammer Academy in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area. While at Kings Hammer, Smith was an integral part of the success that led to Kings Hammer Academy being accepted into the US Soccer Development Academy.  Smith led his teams at KHA to a Midwest Regional League Championship, US Youth National League promotion, a Kentucky State Championship, and three State Finalist finishes in both Kentucky and Ohio.  He was instrumental in developing a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year, one US Youth National Team player, NSCAA High School All-American players, three US Youth Futsal National team players, and several athletes that competed and still compete within NCAA Division I soccer.  Numerous players that Smith developed at Kings Hammer went on to earn All-American, Conference Player of the Year, All-Conference, Tournament Most Outstanding Player, and All-Region honors at the collegiate level.

Smith’s experience is not just limited to club soccer as he possesses multiple years as a coach at the collegiate level.

Most recently, Smith served on staff for the University of Dayton’s women’s soccer program.  In 2014, Dayton won the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament and earned a NCAA Tournament berth.  In Smith’s two seasons at Dayton, 16 players earned All-A10, All-A10 Rookie, and All-A10 Tournament Awards.  Most notably, Canadian National Team youth players Nicole Waters and Ashley Campbell left the school as the Career Leaders in Assists and Goals, respectively.  Waters also broke the school record for Assists in a Season in 2014.  During Smith’s time with the Flyers, Waters earned A10 Midfielder of the Year twice, Senior Class All-American, and NSCAA All-Region honors.  Campbell was named A10 Offensive Player of the Year and All-American by College Sports Madness.

Prior to his time at Dayton, Smith served three seasons as an Assistant Coach at Xavier University.  He was instrumental in guiding the Musketeers to their first winning campaign in nearly a decade.  While at Xavier, Smith was responsible for recruiting, training, film analysis, and scouting.  Players earned All-BIG EAST, All-A10, and All-A10 Rookie honors in his three seasons.  Most notably, Katie Markesbery left Xavier as the All-Time leader in Wins,Shutouts, and Saves.  Smith’s work with Xavier’s defensive unit helped break and eclipse Xavier records for Shutouts in a Season in 2012 and 2013.

Smith served the 2010-11 season as the Director of Soccer Operations at Miami University.  The Redhawks won the 2010 Mid-American Conference East Division while four athletes earned All-MAC accolades and two were All-MAC Tournament selections.  Miami finished 7th in NCAA for Scoring Offense while individually Kayla Zakrzewski set a new Miami record for Assists in a Game.

Smith also served as an Assistant Soccer Coach for the men’s program at Hanover College, where he coordinated recruiting and scouting. Five of Smith’s recruits earned All-HCAC honors.  In 2009, Smith helped Hanover to its first ever HCAC Championship final.

For two years, Smith was a Boys Staff Coach at Columbus Express. His teams had seven players go on to play collegiate soccer.

As a standout multi-sport athlete at Hanover College, he lettered in both men’s soccer and track and field.  In his lone season at Hanover, Smith was named Captain and led the team in assists.  Smith also played soccer at Thomas More College for three seasons.  At Thomas More, Smith was named All-President’s Athletic Conference, Team MVP, Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, and was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Smith graduated from Hanover College with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and English in May 2010.  In July 2012, he completed a Masters of Physical Education & Coaching from Ball State University.  Most recently, Smith gained a diploma in Sports and Exercise Nutrition from Shaw Academy in July 2016.  Smith also holds the NSCAA Premier Diploma in addition to other soccer-related certifications.
